According to the Monetary Policy Report of the Bank of Central African States, published in December 2024, this category of loans reached 17.4% of the banks' credit portfolio as of the end of September last year, up 1.4% year-over-year. According to the Banking Commission of Central Africa, non-performing loans consist of immobilized loans, unpaid loans, and doubtful loans.A high level of non-performing loans in banks creates distrust between credit institutions and borrowers, leading lenders to protect themselves against risk. Credit institutions often require borrowers to provide guarantees considered excessive, in addition to high interest rates, which limits access to credit.
