Senegal: To Suspend Export Of Crude Textile Materials.

The announcement was made on December 9,2024 ,during a meeting organized by the German Federal Ministry For Economic Cooperation and Development,with private sector entrepreneurs supported under the Invest For Jobs program.

The Minister of Industry and Trade , Seringne Gueye Diop,announced that Senegal will halt the export of crude textile materials to protect local textile and clothing businesses while fostering the growth of Senegal's domestic textile industry. This initiative aligns with Senegal's broader economic strategy to foster self-reliance and reduce dependency on foreign markets by prioritizing local production. Senegal is one of the West African countries where cotton production plays a significant role in the economy, the government aims to create more jobs and ensure sustainable growth for its industrial sector. This initiative, active in more than 5 African countries promotes investments and job creation across various industries. Industry contributes 25% to Senegal's GDP and is a vital sector for job creation. According to data from the National Agency for Statistics and Demography, cotton exports, brought in approximately $ 20,1 Million in 2022 in the country. Senegal's seed cotton harvest is expected to increase by 8% , reaching nearly 14000 tons in the 2024-2025 season.
