Economic management:Congo wants to recalculate its GDP to improve its debt indicators
Dernière mise à jours il y'a 5 moisThe Republic of Congo and the African Development Bank (AfDB) have signed a $602,000 grant agreement, to comprehensively revise the country's national economic indicators calculation base. This project, known as rebasage des comptes nationaux, aims to update the base year for calculating economic indicators from 2005 to a more recent year, reflecting current economic realities
The grant from the Technical Assistance Fund for Middle-Income Countries aims to support the revision of the country's national accounts base to bring it up to current standards. Specifically, the grant will facilitate the transition to the 2008 System of National Accounts (SNA 2008), an internationally compliant methodological framework that will replace the current system used in Congo . Additionally, it will prepare the country for the transition to the recently adopted SNA 2025, which notably includes environmental goods and services in the measurement of national wealth, a crucial aspect for a country like Congo rich in natural resources. The revision of the national accounts will allow for the integration of sectors that were previously underestimated or poorly accounted for, such as the digital sector, telecommunications, informal economy, NGOs and non-profit institutions, as well as digital financial services. This update is expected to have a direct impact on the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which was estimated at 9,296 billion CFA francs in 2024 according to the BEAC, and is expected to reach 9,443 billion CFA francs in 2025. The increase in GDP is not the only expected change from this activity, which is part of the National Strategy for Statistical Development (SNDS II 2022-2026) of Congo. The debt ratio could significantly decrease, along with the improvement of certain macroeconomic indicators, which will strengthen the transparency and credibility of the country vis-à-vis technical and financial partners. Rebuilding constitutes a powerful lever to improve the risk profile and mobilize more resources for development. This rebasing will anchor Congo's economic decisions in the current reality of its economy. It will strengthen economic governance, improve the country's visibility in the markets, and better integrate sustainability and environmental issues in measuring national wealth
