Trade : Cameroon's borders will soon be modernized
Dernière mise à jours il y'a 3 semaineThe acceleration of trade within the CEMAC zone has reached a new technological and structural milestone. On December 23, 2025, the Minister of Trade, Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana, endorsed the foundations of a cross-border trade support program presented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM). This initiative, widely supported by development partners, aims to transform the country's borders into hubs of fluidity to optimize the benefits of the AfCFTA.

The transformation of national corridors is now backed by a robust financial lever. The project unveiled at the Ministry of Trade represents a total investment of 2,252,354 Units of Account (UA), approximately 1.8 billion FCFA. The African Development Bank (AfDB) provides the primary funding through a grant of 2,000,000 UA, supplemented by the technical and financial contribution of the IOM. Operational deployment focuses on the strategic Douala-Bangui and Douala-Kousseri axes. These corridors, which serve as the economic lifelines for Chad, the CAR, and Northern Cameroon, will benefit from the modernization of intangible infrastructure. Specifically, the program includes automated data collection to reduce administrative bottlenecks, sustainable governance of control services, and improved financial inclusion for local actors.
The vision championed by Minister Mbarga Atangana is based on a pragmatic observation: commercial efficiency is inseparable from the intelligent management of mobility. By tackling non-tariff barriers, the project aims to facilitate the transit of goods while securing the movement of people. This innovative approach helps anchor the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) into the daily reality of border posts, where the speed of procedures is the key to competitiveness. The program places a central focus on the resilience of sensitive areas. This involves strengthening the capacities of local governments and technical services to ensure fluid surveillance that does not hinder trade. By limiting capital flight and encouraging the liberalization of services, Cameroon hopes to transform every crossing point into a free zone of prosperity.
Beyond macroeconomics, the intervention seeks to be inclusive. It specifically targets the empowerment of women, youth, and small-scale cross-border operators. These actors, who drive the local economy, will receive support to better integrate into regional value chains. The involvement of the diaspora is also planned to provide expertise and capital for the development of border localities. Minister Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana reiterated the full support of the Cameroonian government to ensure the success of this structuring project. At the dawn of 2026, the modernization of Cameroonian borders no longer represents just a matter of control, but an economic sovereignty strategy aimed at making Cameroon the undisputed logistics hub in Central Africa.
