Optical Fiber : Camtel Records Revenue Increase in 2024

Dernière mise à jours il y'a 1 mois

Optical fiber infrastructure is consolidating its position as the most dynamic revenue source for Cameroon's public telecommunications operator, Camtel. Data for the 2024 fiscal year, revealed in a report by the Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ART), attests to a clear progression in activity. Revenue generated by fiber reached 33.7 billion FCFA, marking an increase of 17.15% compared to the 28.7 billion FCFA collected in 2023.

This financial leap is the result of a combination of factors related to both supply and demand. The ART report highlights that the improved performance is attributable to rigorous maintenance and upkeep work on Camtel's transport network. Furthermore, the impetus comes from an increased demand for bandwidth from major high-volume data users: other mobile operators, Internet Service Providers (ISPs), and the corporate sector. The intensive use of data confirms Camtel's central importance in the country's digital economy.

Thanks to government support, Camtel has successfully established national and international connectivity, giving Cameroon the role of a digital exchange hub for Central Africa. The company's backbone network spans nearly 12,000 km of optical fiber. Metropolitan optical loops of over 500 km are also deployed within eight regional capitals. This network coverage is remarkable: it serves all ten regional capitals, 51 of the 58 departmental capitals, and 209 of the 360 divisional capitals. Furthermore, it ensures crucial border interconnection with the Central African Republic (CAR), Chad, Nigeria, Gabon, and Equatorial Guinea.

On a global scale, the operator has secured access to information via three landing stations (located in Kribi, Limbe, and Douala). These entry points provide access to major submarine cables such as SAT3, WACS, NCSCS, and SAIL, which connect the continent to Europe, Asia, and America.

Camtel holds ownership rights to a capacity representing approximately 50,000 km on these cables. These substantial resources allow it to position itself as a provider of choice, ensuring international transmission services for national and sub-regional operators. The transport network is technically supported by 8,743.48 km of optical backbone, 97 ADM nodes, 68 microwave links, and 119 optical fiber segments, solidifying its role as a technological pillar.
