According to a source close to the Ministry of Public Works, the African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved the awarding of contracts for the reconstruction of National Road N1, a 278 km project connecting Ngaoundéré to Garoua. The project's financing is primarily provided by the African Development Bank (AfDB), which is contributing 221.6 billion FCFA. This investment is complemented by 8 billion FCFA from the African Development Fund and 4.8 billion FCFA from the Cameroonian state. The selection process, which chose five Chinese companies, was conducted without controversy, as the technical bids were deemed convincing.
The project has been divided into five lots for more efficient execution and optimal work management. Each lot has been awarded to a different company. Specifically, Lot 1 (Ngaoundéré – Bottom of the Mbe cliff, 50 km) was awarded to CGCOC Group for 38.6 billion FCFA (36 months). Lot 2 (Bottom of the Mbe cliff – Keroua Bridge, 39 km) goes to China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) for 29.2 billion FCFA (24 months). Lots 3 and 4 (Keroua Bridge – Salah Bridge, 77 km; Salah Bridge – Ouro André Entrance, 56 km) were awarded to China First Highway Engineering Company for a total of 58.7 billion FCFA.
Lot 5 (Ouro André Entrance – Bénoué Bridge, 56 km) is the responsibility of China International Water & Electric Corp (CWE), a subsidiary of CFHEC, for 26 billion FCFA (24 months).
The reconstruction of the Ngaoundéré-Garoua road is fundamental for the development of Cameroon. It is essential for opening up the Northern and Adamawa regions, which are agricultural and pastoral areas that play a major role in the country's economy. The new infrastructure will facilitate the transport of goods to markets in the south, boost regional trade, and create job opportunities for local populations. According to sources close to the matter, the work is expected to begin "in the coming days," marking the launch of a major project for Cameroon's economic future.
