Financed to the tune of 7.8 million Units of Account (UA), with 7 million UA provided by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and a counterpart of 800,000 UA provided by the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC), this project enables the LCBC and its five member states (Cameroon, Niger, Nigeria, Central African Republic, and Chad) to restore Lake Chad and strengthen the resilience of populations by revitalizing its economic and ecological functions through improved hydraulicity of the Chari-Logone river system. The Lake Chad Basin (LCB) is characterized by a semi-arid climate with variable annual rainfall, which influences the practice of various activities dominated by primary and tertiary sectors. The primary sector, which includes fishing, agriculture, and livestock, employs over 80% of the population of the Lake Chad Basin, who are vulnerable to climate variability. The region's economy, as well as the climatic factors that make it highly vulnerable to variability, is heavily dependent on the availability of water resources and the ecosystems of the Lake Chad Basin's wetlands. In order to address this issue related to water resource availability, at the regional level, the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) adopted a Strategic Action Program for the Lake Chad Basin for the period 2023-2035 in November 2022.This program aims to ensure integrated water resources management and develop operational food security programs by promoting irrigated agriculture. This will be achieved through cooperation and sharing of Lake Chad Basin resources among member countries; integrated management of water basins; and funding programs to enhance food security and population resilience. The technical support project for restoring ecological and economic functions of the Lake Chad Basin was initiated in 2023 and will be implemented from 2025 to 2028
