Douala is struggling with a significant water shortage, with a daily shortfall of more than 200,000 cubic meters. Production currently covers only about 60% of demand, and the deficit is increasing due to annual population growth. To tackle this challenge, a large-scale project was required to overhaul the water supply system in Douala and its environs. The drinking water supply project in Douala and its surroundings, spearheaded by the Minister of Water and Energy, will be executed by the Chinese company Sinomach. The project to redevelop, extend and modernize the drinking water supply system in Douala falls within the framework of the national development strategy, which seeks to respond to the challenges of demographic growth and urbanization, and guarantee sustainable access to drinking water for the entire population of Douala and its surroundings.
