Competition : Douala Hosts the National Barista Final
Dernière mise à jours il y'a 2 heuresThe aroma of Cameroonian coffee is no longer confined to the jute bags destined for raw export; it is now expressed through the precise, millimetric gestures of artisanal skill. This Wednesday, January 14, 2026, the Central Analysis Laboratory of the National Cocoa and Coffee Board (NCCB), located in the Akwa district of Douala, has been transformed into a high-tech arena for the grand final of the second edition of the National Barista Championship.

Having commenced on January 12, this competition transcends mere entertainment to become the spearhead of a branding strategy. Under the patronage of Michael Ndoping, General Manager of the NCCB, the event consecrates the emergence of an elite group of coffee sommeliers, capable of transforming local production into a sensory experience of international standing.
The stakes of this contest extend beyond national borders. The winner of this edition will bear the significant responsibility of representing the country at the Barista Championship scheduled for next month in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the true African capital of "black gold." This diplomatic and economic dimension underscores the determination of the NCCB, in partnership with the Cameroonian chapter of the African Fine Coffees Association (AFCA), to reposition Cameroonian coffee within the premium segment. By competing against representatives from the largest coffee brands and houses across all ten regions, the finalists must demonstrate innovation and technical mastery, proving that Cameroonian youth are now taking ownership of the entire value chain, from cherry to cup.
Beyond the competition, this gathering in the heart of Akwa serves as a networking platform for the key players in the sector. The massive presence of industry professionals testifies to the growing importance of service trades in enhancing the value of locally produced Robusta and Arabica coffee. By promoting excellence and innovation, Cameroon seeks to capture a larger share of the added value in the global fine coffee market. This national final is therefore but a prelude to a charm offensive on the continental stage, where the expertise of Cameroonian baristas will be the strongest selling point for an origin increasingly prized by lovers of exceptional vintages.
