This is an important step taken by Cameroon for the preservation of artisanal fishing. According to the Director-General of the World Trade Organization, this agreement is particularly vital for artisanal fishermen in Cameroon and around the world as it preserves their livelihoods by reducing harmful subsidies and preserving marine ecosystems for future generations.Cameroon becomes the third (3rd) CEMAC country to join the Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies. The agreement in question has several advantages for Cameroon. It should help reduce the capacity of foreign industrial vessels, accused of abusing Cameroonian territorial waters, by prohibiting the subsidies they receive from their country of origin. Cameroon will be able to request funding from the World Trade Organization's Fisheries Fund to strengthen its capacity to control and monitor fishing activities in its waters, as well as to improve its fisheries management system. This ratification is part of the Cameroonian government's strategy to clean up and develop an important sector for the national economy.
