This project falls under the Transport Sector Support Program , which aims to modernize Cameroon's road network and strengthen regional commercial corridors. Rehabilitating the Ngaoundere- Garoua road will reduce logistical costs, improve goods circulation, and enhance regional economic integration. The AfDB has already invested heavily in Cameroon's transport sector, with a portfolio of nine active projects representing 824.8 billion FCFA in financing. This new financing demonstrates the AfDB's commitment to supporting development projects in Africa and strengthening regional economic integration.
This financing is intended for the reconstruction of the Ngaoundéré-Garoua road, a 242 km long section that connects the Adamaoua and North regions. This road is part of the key corridor linking the Cameroonian city of Douala to N'Djamena, the capital of Chad. However, this road is currently in very poor condition, making its use complicated and significantly increasing the costs and transportation time for users. As a reminder, the financing of this section of the Douala-N'Djamena corridor is largely secured by a loan of 318.24 million euros (equivalent to 216 billion FCFA) granted by the African Development Bank (AfDB). This loan was approved on September 13, 2024, as part of the fourth phase of the Transport Sector Support Program . In addition to this loan, supplementary financing of 12.24 million euros (approximately 8 billion FCFA) was made available by the African Development Fund, a concessional window of the AfDB.The agreement between Cameroon and the African Development Bank encompasses not only the construction of the Ngaoundere -Garoua road but also a comprehensive socioeconomic development project along this axis.According to Cameroonian Minister of Economy Alamin Ousmane Mey, the 216 billion CFA francs allocated by the African Development Bank will fund socioeconomic recovery operations in all territories along the road. The project aims to promote economic inclusion, increase employment opportunities for young women, and restore mobility and connectivity to boost dynamic cross-border trade
