This railway project is considered the keystone for the exploitation of the Bélinga iron ore, a deposit whose reserves are estimated at over one billion tons. The project aims to open up the mining areas in the northeast of the country by creating an efficient and suitable transport corridor for conveying the ore to the deep-sea port of Mayumba, from where it will be exported. This investment is part of a larger development plan that includes other infrastructure, particularly port and energy facilities, to guarantee the success of the mining operation.
The funding from Citic Holding is part of a partnership between the Chinese company and other players in the sector, including Thelo Group and EGAAD. It marks a strong collaboration with the Gabonese state, which is relying on these partnerships to fulfill its economic diversification ambitions. By focusing on the mining sector, the Gabonese government is seeking to reduce its dependence on oil revenues, whose production has been in decline for several years.
This substantial amount shows international investors' confidence in Gabon's potential. The completion of this railway is essential for attracting other investments and generating growth in the regions concerned. Beyond the economic impact, the project is expected to create jobs and boost local economies. It confirms the country's determination to position itself as a major player in the African mining sector.
