Fisheries and Aquaculture : Yaoundé and Rabat Seal a Research and Innovation Agreement
Dernière mise à jours il y'a 1 heuresThe strengthening of productive capacities in the fisheries sector has reached a significant milestone. On the sidelines of the 18th edition of the International Agricultural Show in Morocco (SIAM), which opened on April 20, 2026, in Meknès, the Minister of Livestock, Fisheries, and Animal Industries (MINEPIA), Dr. Taïga, initialed a structural framework agreement with Moroccan authorities. This agreement defines the operational modalities for an extended collaboration in scientific research, aquaculture, and the modernization of processing industries. For Cameroon, this rapprochement with Rabat constitutes an essential lever to stabilize its food trade balance and optimize the management of its maritime resources.

The heart of this partnership rests on the transfer of technologies and the sharing of academic expertise. The protocol provides facilities for actor training and the implementation of joint research programs. By connecting the research organizations of both nations, the Cameroonian administration seeks to improve the techniques for capturing and preserving seafood products. This scientific cooperation is indispensable for adapting local methods to international marketing standards. The objective consists of building a more robust value chain capable of generating sustainable income for coastal populations while ensuring the durable exploitation of stocks. Technical mastery here becomes a guarantee of competitiveness.
A major pillar of this protocol concerns the security of the maritime space. Both countries commit to intensifying their exchange of information and experience regarding fisheries enforcement. In the face of persistent illegal extractive practices that weaken the ecosystem and the local economy, the pooling of control resources is necessary. By drawing on Morocco's experience in managing surveillance equipment and regulating fleets, Cameroon strengthens its response capacity against the scourges that deplete its national wealth. This increased surveillance guarantees the long-term sustainability of the sector.
This signature formalizes an already dynamic relationship, particularly through exchanges with the National Agency for the Development of Aquaculture. The ultimate goal of this South-South cooperation is to raise the living standards of fishers through better market integration and increased productivity. By investing in processing industries, the Government aims to reduce post-capture losses and guarantee a regular supply to domestic markets. Every project initiated within the framework of this agreement participates in building economic autonomy. The success of this partnership depends on the speed with which technicians translate these commitments into concrete results. Every step strengthens the resilience of the national food system.
