Creative Economy : SIARC Set to Be the Catalyst for Artisanal Innovation
Dernière mise à jours il y'a 2 semaineThe Ministry of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises, Social Economy, and Handicrafts (MINPMEESA) is actively preparing for one of the most anticipated events on the institutional calendar: the 9th edition of the International Craft Fair of Cameroon (SIARC). The ambition is to transform ancestral know-how into a modern engine of growth. Scheduled to take place on the esplanade of the National Museum in Yaoundé, this biennial event is designed as a laboratory for a new era for local creators, building on the successes of the previous year.

The selected theme, "Between Tradition and Modernity: How to Stimulate Artisanal Innovation?", highlights a political will to reach a new milestone. Following an 8th edition that—according to official MINPMEESA reports—explored the virtues of digital technology for global inclusion, SIARC is now tackling the challenge of competitiveness. The goal is to integrate new technologies into manufacturing processes without compromising cultural authenticity. This approach aims to allow Cameroonian products to conquer international markets that are increasingly demanding in terms of finishing and durability, aligning directly with the National Development Strategy (SND30).
The resounding success of the session held in July 2024 serves as the foundation for this new programming. As a reminder, statistical data compiled by the handicraft services recorded over 800 exhibitors, including 510 artisans rigorously selected at the departmental and regional levels, attracting an audience of 20,000 visitors. The presence of about fifty government members and a dozen foreign delegations with Tunisia as the guest of honor confirmed the diplomatic dimension of the fair. Training workshops and professional networking spaces facilitated the creation of solid business ties, making the event a genuine springboard for export.
The current edition is expected to reinforce these gains through a more pronounced inclusion of young talent and increased exposure to engineering solutions tailored for small-scale industry. By emphasizing innovation, the Cameroonian government reaffirms its commitment to making the craft sector a pillar of the circular economy. The objective is to transition from subsistence craftsmanship to a structured creative industry capable of generating decent jobs and participating actively in national wealth. The modernization of marketing channels and the protection of the intellectual property of artisanal works will be the highlights of this benchmark gathering.
